Cornea Services

What is cornea?

Cornea is a clear, transparent front portion of the eye. It transmites light along with lens and help focus light on retina so that image is seen. At KHANNA EYE CENTRE we provide efficient management of broad range of corneal disease like:

  • Corneal infections
  • Corneal ulcer (Bacterial, fungal, viral and acanthameoba etc.
  • Corneal tear
  • Foreign body removal
  • Corneal dystrophies
  • Allergic eye disease
  • Keratoconus and other ectasias
  • Ocular surface disorder like chemical injuries ,Steven Johnson syndrome
  • Dry eye
  • Imunological disease of cornea
  • Ocular surface tumors etc.
  • Contact lens related issues
  • We have ANTERIOR SEGMENT IMAGING EQUIPMENT for the same like:
  • Corneal topography (evaluate shape and power of cornea surface)
  • Pentacam (3D analysis of cornea )
  • Anterior segment OCT( to detect level of corneal opacities etc)
  • Corneal Disease: An overview –

Keratoconus is a greek word composed of Kerato = cornea

    Conus = cone shape

It is characterized by progressive central thinning of the cornea changing it from dome shaped to cone shape. This results in distorted or decreased vision. Some environmental and genetic factors are responsible for the same. Usually associated excessive eye rubbing , retinitis pigmentosa, Ehler Danlos syndrome etc. This condition usually a child develop in their teens. At KHANNA EYE CENTRE, we have latest equipment like

  • Corneal topography (evaluate shape and power of cornea surface).
  • Pentacam (3D analysis of cornea )
  • Anterior segment OCT( to detect level of corneal opacities, epithelial thickness mapping etc)

  • In progressive Keratoconus in order to strengthen the cornea C3R (CORNEAL COLLAGEN CROSSLINKING) is recommended. The minimum corneal thickness required is 400 microns and above. In this procedure corneal collagen crosslinking with riboflavin solution along with ultraviolet (UV A rays) exposure is done with a high end machine. Main purpose of doing C3R is to stabilize Keratoconus so that contact lenses or glasses can be used to have better vision.

At KHANNA EYE CENTRE, we use latest technology to perform C3R and give the best possible results a keratoconic eye deserves.

Modalities for vision improvement in keratoconus like TORIC ICL surgery, RGP and Rose K contact lens are available.

    Corneal Ulcer –

It is infection in the cornea associated with inflammation, redness and ulcer formation. Most common causes include vegetative injury, contact lens induced infection, vitamin A deficiency etc.

    Eye Trauma –

Trauma to eye can lead to damage to cornea like corneal tear requiring urgent surgical management.

    Viral Keratitis –

Due to various viruses like helps zoster, herpes simplex, varicella zoster cause a variety of eye problem .They can cause blisters on one side of forehead, eyelid and inflammation in all parts of the eye. If not treated properly there are chances of sequele to the disease and ever recurrences in some patients.

    Corneal Dystrophies –

They are corneal disease which can be genetically transmitted in a family. Deposition of various accumulates abnormal material in the clear cornea resulting in cloudy vision. Epithetial basement membrane dystrophy , Fuchs corneal dystrophy, Macular corneal dystrophy are common dystrophies.

    Dry Eye –

With today’s workstyle involving prolonged screen time of laptops and mobiles dry eye has become very common condition It can also be caused by systemic and hormonal disorders It is characterized by redness and foreign body sensation burning in the eye.

    Congenital Disease –
<>Presence of cloudy cornea at birth can be due to various genetic corneal disorders ( like corneal dystrophy, congenital glaucoma peters anomaly etc.) or due infections in pregnancy ( like rubella infection etc.)
    Contact lens related issues –

Use of contact lens can be associated with redness, itchy ,dry eyes resulting in blurring vision. It can also cause vision threatening complications like corneal ulcers.

CORNEAL SURGERIES- Corneal Transplant Surgery (Keratoplasty)

It refers to removing unhealthy cornea (either partial or total ) surgically and replacing it with a healthy donor cornea ( either partial or total ) Depending on the disease our cornea surgeon will advise the different types of keratoplasty ( corneal transplant surgery ). Types of corneal surgery transplant available at KHANNA EYE CENTRE.

    Penetrating keratoplasty (PK) –

Refers to replacement of full thickness disease cornea with healthy cornea tissue.

DALK (Deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty) –

It is type of partial thickness corneal transplant surgery involving replacements of anterior (front) disease corneal tissues with healthy donor tissue.

    Endothelial keratoplasty ( DSEK, DMEK ) –

Refers to replacement of full thickness disease cornea with healthy cornea tissue.

    OTHER CORNEAL SURGERIES–
    PTERYGIUM SURGERY WITH SUTURELESS AUTOGRAFT

It involves removal of wing shaped whitish mass encroaching cornea and replacement with conjunctival graft transplantation done with the latest NO SUTURE TECHNIQUE.

    CORNEAL TEAR REPAIR

Trauma causing cornea tear needs urgent surgical management

    AMNIOTIC MEMBRANE GRAFTING

In chemical injuries ,accidental Chuna (lime powder)fall in eye
